Abstract
Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) has the potential to strengthen Aeromedical services for remote Australian communities by improving the speed, reliability, and equity of medical logistics. However, the operational performance and sustainability of AAM-enabled healthcare systems in very remote settings in Australia remains insufficiently understood. This presentation reports findings from a proof-of-concept trial linking two remote community health centres in West Arnhem, Northern Territory.
The trial evaluated the use of AAM to transport essential medical items between remote sites and compared performance against conventional transport methods. The results demonstrated several important benefits, including reduced delivery times, improved cold-chain integrity, and lower carbon emissions. However, the trial also identified significant barriers to operational reliability and scalability. Non-aviation challenges—including regulatory complexity, climatic and engineering constraints, and persistent workforce shortages. Workforce limitations, compounded by regulatory requirements, contributed to the cancellation of approximately 60% of scheduled flights, an outcome that is unacceptable for a reliable aeromedical service. The project also revealed stakeholder-engagement challenges that may limit broader adoption of freight UAV operations in remote and regional Australia if not addressed early and collaboratively.
The findings suggest that while AAM offers meaningful benefits for remote healthcare delivery, achieving a sustainable and commercially viable model in Remote Australia will require coordinated action. Priorities include regulatory reform, harmonised data systems, workforce development, and community co-design to support safe, reliable, and scalable implementation.
