The Rega drone – A technology platform to save lives

More than 70% of the severe diagnosis in emergency patients are time critical. Thus, it is important to find the patient quickly and reduce the therapy-free interval. After a professional intervention and stabilisation of the patient, a transport to a hospital, where a definitive treatment can be immediately performed, is of greatest importance to achieve a good medical outcome after an accident or acute incident. In bad weather search flights are not possible, resulting often in lengthy search missions by ground teams. If the patient could be located faster, also in bad weather, ground teams could evacuate a patient earlier what would contribute positively to the medical outcome.

Rega has developed its own drone and an operations concept for such search missions in bad weather. Currently, the drone is in the final test phase, before it will enter operation in January 2020. The presentation explains these technological and operational aspects as a priceless add-on to Rega’s operations for people in distress and who got lost in a difficult terrain and in difficult weather.
