Abstract:

Sometimes we find our expertise and training challenged by the unpredictable forces of chance. Should we try things that we have never tried before?

In a perfect world this question should be easy to answer, ‘no…. stick to the book’. However, the worlds not perfect and the books not finished.

When an emergency call was received detailing 3 people lost at sea after a boat flipped at night at Port Waikato Bar (NZ), a multi-agency response was co-ordinated for their rescue.

Throughout this case review, the remarkable relationship between luck, skill and what influenced decision making will be explored from the perspective of one of the flight crew.

This is the story of a landmark case of rescue and resuscitation of hypothermic cardiac arrest in New Zealand, and its enduring effects on the speaker.
