The Royal Flying Doctor Service
The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations in the world.
Using the latest in aviation, medical and communications technology, the RFDS delivers extensive primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to those who live, work and travel throughout Australia.
Operating from 23 aero-bases and 19 road service hubs located around the country, their waiting room covers 7.69 million square kilometres -- the largest in the world. They have 79 planes, 2 helicopters making them Australia’s 3rd largest airline, and their fleet also includes 163 healthcare vehicles and has contact with more than 1000 patients a day.
Traditionally known for their 24-hour aeromedical emergency services to country Australia, the Flying Doctor also does regular fly-in fly-out GP & Nursing and Allied Health Clinics to rural and remote communities. They have extensive tele-health consultation services, do inter-hospital transfers, provide dental care, mental health and also health education services across all states of Australia.

CRANAplus is a grassroots, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation that was founded in 1983. It provides services, support and opportunities to nurses, midwives and other health professionals to ensure the delivery of safe, high quality primary healthcare to remote and isolated areas of Australia.
CRANAplus delivers educational courses contextualised to the remote and isolated setting to upskill the remote health workforce. Its Bush Support Line provides free, confidential, 24-hour counselling to members of this workforce and their families.
CRANAplus also serves its membership by representing the workforce and advocating for change within the remote health sector, providing scholarships and grants, facilitating remote health employment, and providing career support and advice.

Retrieval Services Queensland (RSQ) is responsible for the clinical coordination of all aeromedical retrievals and transfers of patients from parts of Northern New South Wales up to the Torres Straight Islands. RSQ plays a vital role in helping overcome the vast distances throughout the State, supporting equitable access to specialist clinical services for all Queenslanders.
Telehealth Emergency Management Support Unit (TEMSU) is also a component of the RSQ service, providing unscheduled, video and telemedicine emergency support to rural and remote clinicians. The service facilitates, after hours nursing support and Emergency Specialist clinical advice to rural and remote Non-FACEM QH facilities.
RSQ also delivers specialist clinical and midwifery support, education and training across rural, regional and remote emergency departments and health facilities, with a focus on initial resuscitation of critically ill or injured patients, complex obstetric retrieval referrals and preparation of patients for aeromedical transfer.

The Children’s Health Queensland Retrieval Service (CHQRS) is the statewide service lead for paediatric retrievals in Queensland which also includes northern New South Wales. CHQRS partners with Retrieval Services Queensland who are the first point of call for escalation of unwell paediatric patients for consideration of interfacility transfer. CHQRS also works closely with Yalurin, the Townsville University Hospital paediatric retrieval service.
CHQRS delivers critical care advice via paediatric medical coordinators (PMCs) and provides doctor and nurse retrieval teams with a paediatric critical care skillset. CHQRS PMCs also coordinate critically unwell children retrieved by other teams in southern Queensland. In the last financial year, CHQRS PMCs coordinated 1765 cases and CHQRS teams performed 719 retrievals, including the 5000th patient since the service began in 2014. CHQRS teams transfer patients interstate to destination hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney, for example, as well as to the Queensland children’s hospice, Hummingbird House. CHQRS also supports the delivery of the CHQ ECLS (paediatric ECMO) service in Queensland.
