Retrieval challenges in Toxicology

I am a Clinical Toxicologist, Emergency Physician working at Royal Perth Hospital and the WA Toxicology Service.  The WA Toxicology Service is a part of the National Poisons network.  There are some unique logistical challenges of managing acutely poisoned and envenomed patients in a large, relatively sparsely populated state.  We will introduce the concept of risk assessment and how it is used to assists us in addressing some of these challenges.  The importance of collaboration and understanding between the Poisons Network, the retrieval teams.  The principles behind the stocking of antivenom and antidotes around a large state like WA.


Biography:

Dr Jessamine Soderstrom is a Clinical Toxicologist and Emergency Physician at Royal Perth Hospital.  The current head of Clinical Toxicology at RPH and a member of the WA Toxicology Service and the Clinical Centre of Research in Emergency Medicine.  Her current area of research is Metamphetamines and novel psychoactives.  Her aim is to foster collaborations between Emergency Departments and Forensic laboratories around the country to form a national registry for emerging drugs of abuse (Emerging Drugs Network of Australia).  This will serve as a surveillance tool and also the development of an early warning system
