As part of its broader suite of services, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Central Operations (RFDSCO) provides aeromedical retrieval and transfers throughout South Australia, the Northern Territory, and increasingly also to various interstate centres.

In 2020/21, during progress towards NSQHS accreditation, the clinical governance structure of RFDSCO was reviewed.  As part of this a Flight Nursing Vision, Values Statement and governance framework, structured around the domains of Clinical Leadership, Organisational Leadership and Cultural Leadership was developed, endorsed and embedded.

This Flight Nurse governance framework forms part of the broader clinical governance framework of RFDSCO.  It is aligned with the strategic priorities of the organisation and ensures integration of interdisciplinary initiatives for a holistic impact on patient safety and quality.

This presentation gives an overview of the development and implementation of the flight nursing governance structure, focusing on measurable indicators of success, the safety and quality benefits, and our approach to making it tangible and part of the day to day in the organisation

Why does it matter? Because what happens in the air starts on the ground.
