International transport of newborns and infants

Abstract:

Acute international transport of children is less common that for adults. A wide variety of agencies and interested parties can be involved; from the employer of a parent to insurance company, assistance company, aircraft operator and specialist medical transport service. Determining whether and how paediatric patients are moved between countries is challenging when systems are usually more used to adult critical care transport. Families face unique issues on behalf of their children when dealing with multiple agencies; from insurance status, insurer, sometimes an employer, assistance company, air operator through to interactions between these and htreating doctors in referring hospitals. Regardless of the outcome of the transport process itself, adverse experiences faced by families can have long term consequences. This presentation will describe some of those consequences to one family – a quarter of a century later.
