How can the old Titanic contribute to modern flight safety?

Mr Stefan Becker1

1Swiss Air-Rescue Rega, Zurich Airport, Switzerland

Abstract:

The oral presentation focuses on a comparison of risks, accident precursors, safety layers and safety management at different levels both in the Titanic disaster and in modern aviation. In an interesting comparative analysis, it will become clear to the audience that deficiencies in awareness, competence and responsibility lead – sooner or later – to serious accidents. Possible mitigation strategies are presented in order to create personal “take home thoughts” for the different stakeholders in the auditorium. Pilots, doctors, nurses, technicians, managers and regulators can and must contribute to safer operations and actively live modern safety management.

Intended for the Programme Committee, but not necessarily for publication: The bottom line of the presentation is “Empowering people – Empowering safety”.
