The third of life’s certainties – To leave or not to leave?

Philip Hogan

People strive to work aeromedical or aviation search and rescue services. It is usually not something thrust upon them, it comes at the end of hard work, personal and family sacrifice and short or long term financial disadvantage. It is not all doom and gloom as the end result can be tremendous personal satisfaction, increased knowledge, high social acceptability and peer elevation.

The only certain aspect of aviation medicine and search and rescue is that at some stage you will leave that sector. This departure can be bitter, sweet, sad, joyful and if not done properly it can have some long term negative implications for the individual and or the organisation. After all the work to get there it is worth paying due consideration to the action that will effect every person at this conference.

This presentation is by a Bendigo farmer who has spent time observing people in the aviation industry who are trying (knowingly or unwittingly) to plan for or deny this day. The presentation is his observations.
